Ukraine crisis: EESC Vice-President meets volunteers from Chernivtsi

EESC Vice-President met volunteers and refugees from Ukraine in northern Romania and visited a refugee camp in Sighetu Marmatiei

The European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) expresses solidarity with the Ukrainian people and supports all international efforts aimed at reaching a peaceful and sustainable solution to the Russia-Ukraine border tensions.

The European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) Vice-President for Communication, Isabel CaƱo Aguilar, visited Chernivtsi, Ukraine, on 28 February 2023, to meet volunteers and refugees from the country and to visit a refugee camp in Sighetu Marmatiei, Romania.

The visit was part of a fact-finding mission to assess the situation on the ground and to show solidarity with the Ukrainian people. The EESC delegation met with representatives from the Chernivtsi Regional State Administration, the Chernivtsi City Council, the Chernivtsi Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and the Chernivtsi Regional Trade Union Council.

The delegation also visited a refugee camp in Sighetu Marmatiei, Romania, where they met with refugees from Ukraine. The camp is run by the Romanian Red Cross and provides shelter, food, and medical care to refugees.

The EESC delegation was impressed by the resilience and determination of the Ukrainian people. The delegation also praised the work of the volunteers and humanitarian workers who are providing assistance to refugees.

The EESC calls for an immediate end to the hostilities in Ukraine and for a peaceful and sustainable solution to the Russia-Ukraine border tensions. The EESC also calls for increased humanitarian aid to Ukraine and for support to refugees fleeing the conflict.
